“Young People Talk About Their Own Health” Training - April 26, 2025
Hosted by EKOKAM and organized by the Health Education Branch of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Department of Health Affairs, the “Young People Talk About Their Own Health” training program was implemented with students of İzmir University of Economics. The training sessions were conducted by Sociologist Duygu Erişkin, Dr. Tülin Ünal, and Psychologist Burçin Çoltu. This interactive training program covers topics such as sexual health, reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, safe relationships, dating violence, gender, personal boundaries, and consent culture. It approaches sexual health as a whole, addressing its physical, social, and psychological dimensions. The aim of the training is to contribute to the protection and promotion of sexual and reproductive health, to prevent sexually transmitted infections, and to encourage positive health behaviors and health-seeking actions among young people. This is achieved through health education and health literacy initiatives that raise awareness of safe sexuality, while also exploring the psychological, psychosocial, and social aspects of sexual and reproductive health.
Masculinities Conference - April 17, 2025
Organized by the Department of Sociology and the Gender and Women's Studies Research and Application Center (EKOKAM) at İzmir University of Economics, the Masculinities Conference addressed the social, cultural, and political dimensions of masculinities. Moderated by Prof. Dr. Feride Çiçekoğlu from Istanbul Bilgi University’s Faculty of Communication, the conference explored various aspects of hegemonic masculinity in patriarchal societies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çimen Günay-Erkol from Özyeğin University’s Faculty of Social Sciences delivered a talk titled “Men and Masculinity in Literature,” while Prof. Dr. Cenk Özbay from Sabancı University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences presented on “Masculinity and Social Change.”
March 8 International Women’s Day Events at IUE
International Women’s Day on March 8 was celebrated with various events at İzmir University of Economics (IUE). Coordinated by the Gender and Women’s Studies Research and Application Center (EKOKAM), the activities brought together academic and administrative staff along with students. Booths organized in the cafeteria and foyer of Building A by EKOKAM, the Faculty of Medicine, the Medicine Club, the Department of Sociology, the Sociology Club, the Department of Psychology, the Psychology Club, the Psychology Practice and Research Center, the Faculty of Law, the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and the IUE Publishing House attracted great attention.
Prevention of Health Seminars – March 5, 2025
As part of the Prevention of Health Seminars organized by the Vocational School of Health Services, Clinical Psychologist Gözde Coşkun from the İzmir Provincial Health Directorate delivered a presentation titled “Approach to Cases of Violence Against Women in Healthcare Institutions,” and EKOKAM Director Prof. Dr. Gönül Dinç Horasan gave a talk on “Dating Violence and Safe Relationships.”
Memorial Forest for Women Employees of IUE - March 03, 2025
A “Memorial Forest” was established in Manisa Yunt Mountain on behalf of the women employees of İzmir University of Economics. The tree planting ceremony, held on Monday, March 3, was attended by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Aslı Ceylan Öner. EKOKAM was represented by its secretary Milhan Gönen and board member Asst. Prof. Arzu Aşçı. The university aims to leave a lasting legacy for the future while making a meaningful contribution to nature.
Awareness and Education Program on Violence Against Women
An awareness and education event on violence against women was held at Urla Hakan Çeken Cultural Center through the collaboration of İzmir University of Economics Continuing Education Center and the Urla District Governorate. Moderated by the Continuing Education Center Director Prof. Dr. Nesrin Oruç Ertürk, the event featured valuable insights from Prof. Dr. Gönül Dinç Horasan, Dr. Arzu Aşçı, and Lecturer Ferda Eser. Topics discussed included types of violence, causes of violence against women and its impact on children, legal procedures, support mechanisms, and available services. The services provided by the Ministry of Family and Social Services and the Ministry of Interior in combating violence were also explained, and the importance of inter-institutional cooperation was emphasized. We stand together to raise awareness and empower ourselves in the fight against violence toward women!
4th İzmir Women and Economy Congress, February 18-19, 2025
The 4th İzmir Women and Economy Congress was held in İzmir on February 18–19, 2025, under the theme “Women and Economy: Strong Economy with Strong Women.” The congress was attended by our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Aslı Ceylan Öner, EKOKAM Chair Prof. Dr. Gönül Dinç Horasan, and EKOKAM board member Dr. Ebru Dığrak. Discussions focused on the role of women in social and economic life, empowerment of women in various fields, development of solutions to women’s issues, and the promotion of gender equality.
